The Feeling Is the Secret — Chapter 4: Feeling (Explained)
Power Is Not in Effort — It’s in Feeling
What if the power you’ve been searching for
wasn’t in action, effort, or struggle at all —
but in a single inner shift?
Neville Goddard opens Chapter 4 with a line that dismantles almost everything we’ve been taught about change:
“Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit.”
For Neville, spirit does not mean something mystical or external.
It means the feeling of the state you live in.
Your inner tone.
Your emotional atmosphere.
The identity you quietly accept as true.
Everything in your life flows from this.

Neville’s teaching works as a progressive system — each chapter deepens the last.
Spirit = The State You Occupy
Neville defines spirit very simply:
Spirit is the feeling of the state you want to live in.
He writes:
“Get into the spirit of the state desired by assuming the feeling that would be yours if you were already the one you want to be.”
This is the core law behind all manifestation.
Once you capture the feeling of the wish fulfilled,
you are relieved of all effort to make it happen —
because inwardly, it already has.
Every Identity Has a Feeling
Neville explains that every idea carries a corresponding emotional state.
- The wealthy version of you feels different than the struggling one.
- The loved version of you feels different than the doubting one.
- The confident version of you feels different than the anxious one.
To change your outer world,
you must change the feeling of who you believe yourself to be.
This is why Neville repeats:
You never attract what you want.
You attract what you are.
“To Him That Hath, It Shall Be Given”
This statement is not metaphorical to Neville.
It is literal law.
“To him that hath” means:
to the one who feels they already have.
When you feel yourself to be the person who possesses the thing,
you become that person —
and life responds in harmony with your new identity.
Assume the feeling that would be yours
if the wish were already fulfilled —
and the wish must be realized.
The Radical Shift: You Are the Operant Power
Neville then moves into his most confronting teaching.
He says we must stop believing in God
and instead recognize that we are one with God.
Not separate.
Not subordinate.
The operant power.
He quotes:
“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.”
Meaning:
the same creative consciousness that speaks reality into form
is the consciousness operating through you.
Jesus said, “I and my Father are one.”
Neville’s interpretation is direct:
It is natural to do the works of the one you believe yourself to be.
If you believe you are small,
you create small.
If you believe you are powerless,
you generate proof of powerlessness.
If you believe you are one with creative power,
creation becomes effortless.
Live in the Feeling — And You Shall Be
Neville’s instruction is strikingly simple:
Live in the feeling of being the one you want to be — and that you shall be.
No forcing.
No convincing.
No manipulation of circumstances.
Only identity.
Demonstration: Changing Identity, Not Circumstances
A woman came to Neville wanting to change her future.
Nothing was “wrong” externally —
but internally, she felt ordinary.
She wanted a life of confidence, radiance, and purpose
but didn’t know how to begin.
Neville told her:
“You are trying to change your world without changing your identity.”
She was imagining new outcomes
while feeling like the same self.
So he gave her one instruction:
Every night before sleep,
assume the feeling of being the woman she wished to express tomorrow.
Not imagining achievements.
Not rehearsing success.
Only stepping into the feeling of being her.
She practiced nightly.
She stopped asking how.
She stopped checking the outside world.
Within months:
- A leadership role appeared without her applying.
- A relationship formed with ease instead of fear.
- Opportunities aligned with her inner confidence.
Neville said simply:
She no longer lived in the old feeling.
She walked in the identity she claimed.
The Four Chapters Integrated
Neville’s entire method is complete in these four chapters:
Chapter 1 — Awareness of Being
Your consciousness is the only creative power.
Whatever you think from, you become.
Chapter 2 — Sleep
Your last feeling before sleep becomes tomorrow’s seed.
End each night in the wish fulfilled.
Chapter 3 — Prayer
Prayer is assuming the state where your wish is already true.
Chapter 4 — Feeling
Feeling is the secret.
Your inner tone is the blueprint of everything you experience.
Demonstration: Entering the State of Wealth
Neville tells of a man who had lost nearly everything.
His business failed.
His savings vanished.
He lived in a tiny rented room, ashamed to face the world.
Each night he prayed:
“God, please help me.”
Neville told him:
“As long as you pray as a poor man, you will remain a poor man.”
He gave him a new practice.
Each night before sleep:
- Imagine holding a heavy leather wallet.
- Feel its weight.
- Smell the leather.
- Hear it snap shut.
- Feel the pride of being prosperous.
It felt ridiculous at first.
No job.
No evidence.
But he returned to the feeling nightly —
not forcing it,
but yielding to it.
One month later, a business opportunity appeared.
Within a year, he was thriving.
Neville did not say he manifested money.
He said:
He entered the state of wealth — and the world conformed.
The Method, Stated Simply
Choose your state.
Feel it as natural.
Fall asleep in it.
Return to it throughout the day.
If you can control your inner state,
you can control your destiny.
This is not positive thinking.
This is not hope.
This is law.
As within, so without.
Final Truth of Chapter 4
Assume the feeling —
and the world must follow.
Your new reality begins
with the feeling you choose
right now.
