The Law of Karma and the Law of Forgiveness (Chapter 5 Explained)
The Boomerang of Life
Have you ever wondered why the same patterns keep repeating?
Why some people seem to receive blessings with ease while others struggle?
There’s a universal law at play — like a boomerang — ensuring that every thought, word, and action you send out returns to you.
Welcome back to Frequency Chapters, where we continue exploring Florence Scovel Shinn’s timeless classic “The Game of Life and How to Play It.”
Today we’re diving into Chapter 5: The Law of Karma and the Law of Forgiveness — one of the most powerful teachings in the entire book.
Karma: The Law of Return
Karma is a Sanskrit word meaning “comeback.”
It’s the law of sowing and reaping — what you give, you get.
Shinn tells of a woman who snapped at her aunt during dinner:
“No more talk — I wish to eat in peace!”
The next day, while dining with an important guest, she was cut off with those exact same words.
The universe doesn’t joke — it simply reflects.
Knowledge Brings Responsibility
The more you understand spiritual law, the more responsible you become.
“The fear of the Lord — or Law — is the beginning of wisdom.”
This isn’t about a vengeful God but an impartial law.
The “law brings vengeance,” not the Creator.
God always sees you as perfect — but you can only manifest what you see yourself becoming.
Your imagination sets the boundaries of your experience.
The Danger of Forcing Your Will
Desire is powerful, but personal will can distort it.
A woman desperately wanted a particular house. She visualized herself living there until she finally got it — after the owner’s death.
Soon after, her own husband died, and the home became a place of sorrow.
Shinn explained: she used personal will rather than divine alignment.
She should have affirmed:
“The right house, mine by divine right.”
When we force outcomes, we create what Shinn called ill-got goods — possessions that bring loss instead of joy.
The key: release control and declare,
“Thy will be done.”
Then, paradoxically, what’s truly yours arrives — peacefully, not painfully.
The Power of Standing Still
Shinn tells of a mother terrified that her daughter would take a dangerous trip. The more she argued, the more defiant the daughter became.
Shinn advised her to stop resisting and surrender the situation to Infinite Wisdom.
The mother affirmed:
“If this trip is divinely planned, I bless it and release it.
If not, I give thanks it is now dissolved.”
Within days, her daughter abandoned the plan — calmly and willingly.
When she let go, everything aligned.
The Law of Forgiveness
What about the karma we’ve already created?
Are we condemned to suffer endlessly for past mistakes?
No. The Law of Forgiveness overrides the Law of Karma.
Through forgiveness, we operate under grace, not under law.
Shinn illustrated this beautifully:
A woman received a counterfeit $20 bill from her bank.
When asked to reflect, she remembered recently mailing fake “stage money” to a friend as a joke.
The law doesn’t understand jokes — it simply mirrored her action.
They invoked forgiveness, affirming:
“Infinite Spirit, we call upon the Law of Forgiveness.
She is under grace and not under law, and cannot lose what is hers by divine right.”
When she returned to the bank, the teller apologized and replaced the bill.
Forgiveness had “rubbed out” the mistake.
Aligning Inner and Outer Order
To attract prosperity, you must first think richly — and act accordingly.
A woman seeking wealth lived in disarray.
Shinn’s advice:
“If you wish to be rich, you must be orderly.
You will never become rich with a burnt match in the pin-cushion.”
She cleaned her home and soon received an unexpected financial gift.
Outer order reflected inner order.
Giving Opens the Door to Increase
Fearful hoarding shuts off supply.
Wise, fearless giving multiplies it.
A man, though short on funds, bought an expensive coat because he felt it represented prosperity.
A month later, he landed a $10,000 commission.
The purchase was an act of faith — and faith must precede demonstration.
From Karma to Grace
While Karma says you reap what you sow,
Forgiveness allows you to transcend the cycle.
By aligning your will with Divine order,
by forgiving yourself and others,
and by cultivating thoughts of abundance,
you rise above cause and effect into a realm of grace —
a place where all that the Kingdom affords is yours.
From consequence to grace.
From limitation to freedom.
From reaction to creation.
Affirmation:
I release the past and call upon the Law of Forgiveness.
I am under grace, and not under law.
Divine order governs my life, and abundance flows freely to me.
